Organist

Gary United Methodist Church in Wheaton, IL seeks a highly skilled and versatile musician to serve as Organist in its dynamic and growing music ministry. The Organist will enjoy use of a 1930 Austin pipe organ (III:45 EP), a Steinway Model B grand piano, and a Hammond A-105 organ. Along with accompanying the Chancel Choir, the Organist serves as the primary keyboard musician at the 9 a.m. Sunday worship service year-round, in addition to occasional responsibilities at other services. As the principal keyboard musician of Gary Church, this person is to be an integral member of the Music Leadership Team. Classification: Permanent; Part-time (10-15 hours per week)
Educational Requirements: Undergraduate degree in Organ Performance or related field; graduate degree or equivalent experience preferred
Reports to: Director of Music

Preferred Skills: Experience in playing liturgical music in a wide range of styles; competency as both a soloist and a sensitive, responsive collaborative artist; possess a degree of prayer and integrated spirituality to be able to live with the ambiguities of daily life and relate to a wide spectrum of people with sensitivity, compassion, empathy, and sincerity; a self-starter who is deadline-oriented; proficiency on piano and other keyboard instruments.

Essential Job Duties

  • Provide all needed service music and hymn accompaniments for the 9 a.m. Sunday worship service, including collaboration with all soloists and choirs, as requested.
  • Serve as the collaborative keyboardist for all rehearsals and special performances of the Chancel Choir, which rehearses on Thursday evenings.
  • When requested, provide organ and/or piano music for the 11:11 a.m. Sunday worship service, as well as the following additional services during the year: Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Christmas Eve, and other possible services, which might include Longest Night (during the week prior to Christmas) and Service of Preparation and Blessing (during Holy Week).
  • Provide music for weddings and funerals, subject to availability, for an additional fee.
  • Maintain the organ, all keyboard instruments owned or borrowed by Gary Church, and the Schulmerich carillon.
  • Participate as an integral member of the Music Ministry, reporting to the Director of Music. Attend staff meetings, all-church events, all-staff training and music department events as able.

Compensation range: $20,000-$24,000

Christian Education Assistant

 

 

Classification:  Part-time, approximately 10 hours per week

Educational Requirements:  High school diploma or equivalent; Background check

Supervisor:  Carey Williams Bebar, Director of Christian Education

 

 

The Christian Education Assistant will support the general operation of Sunday morning Christian Education ministry for children and adults building relationships with members of the Gary Church Community, and with the Lord, through this important service.

 

This person will help create an environment for children and adults to grow in faith; to serve others; to nurture one another; to demonstrate our discipleship; and to proclaim God’s grace and Good News.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to: 

  • Present and prepared each Sunday morning 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. If unable to be present, will find someone else in their absence. 
  • Set up and take down Christian Education Sunday morning ministry each week.
  • Work with the Adult Christian Education Committee to ensure guest presenters are welcomed and her/his special requests are accommodated.
  • Partner with hospitality team members to greet, support and encourage teachers, parents and children. 
  • Organize, maintain and stock materials and supplies for Christian Education. 
  • Support the Gary Church Safe Sanctuaries Policy. Recruit, lead, teach or aid as needed.
  • Coordinate Kids’ Church and Sunday School ministry by ensuring volunteers are present and engaged through clear and consistent communication.
  • Help coordinate Sunday Morning Special Events.
  • Oversee monthly Parent’s Night Out ministry.

 

 

COMPENSATION

  • A $500 monthly stipend is provided August through May.

Building Engineer

Classification: Part-time (approx. 10-12 hours per week)

Reports to: Senior Pastor with accountability to Board of Trustees 
Supervisor: Day-to-day to Church Administrator 
Salary: To be determined based on experience of applicant 

Job Goal & Summary: The role of the Building Engineer is to work with other church staff members to make sure that our church building is available and ready for use for the various activities of the church and community. Therefore, the Building Engineer is part of a team that ensures our ministry is done in a safe, clean environment. While most of these activities will be performed during scheduled working hours, the Building Engineer will need to respond to requests from the Pastor(s) and other staff members. A common purpose and goodwill relationship are required to ensure this occurs with minimal confusion. 

Duty / Responsibility: Building Engineer will be responsible for the items outlined in the Building Engineer Task List (below), including, but not limited to daily, weekly, monthly maintenance of the buildings and grounds, equipment reports, and building repairs and modifications. The candidate will need to perform electrical, plumbing, HVAC, painting/plastering, carpentry, and mechanical repairs as needed. Duties also include attentiveness to developing needs around the building and reporting those needs to the Board of Trustees. The candidate will participate in monthly meetings with the Board of Trustees and may be asked to supervise any outside contracted repairs taking place on the premises. Building Engineer will be asked to take initiative on building upkeep, projects and repairs and bring these to the Board of Trustees for discussion, approval, and action. 

Job Conditions/Physical Requirements: Candidate will need to have ability to lift up to 50 pounds and climb ladders. Building Engineer will need to have ability to work evening or weekend hours should the need arise in supporting the care of the building.
